college and she began teaching in rural schools in Frankville and Burr Oak townships.

Frank and Esther purchased a home (O. M. Norlie house — later known as Luther House) on Center St. in West Decorah. There they raised their 5 daughters: Marilyn married Albert Anderson; Donna married Daryl Bergan; Elaine married Emory Fretheim; Mary Jo married Stanley Finholt; and Diane married David Borness.

Frank and Esther were much involved in church and community affairs. Esther served on the council at Decorah Lutheran Church, taught Sunday School and was Ladies' Aid president for 2 terms. She gave leadership to Girl Scouting for 15 years and served on the Decorah School Board as president for 4 of her 6 years on the board (1958-1964). She has been an instructor in Hook Rug Crafting for 20 years and served for 13 years as director of Rug School sponsored by Vesterheim Museum. She continues to this date as assistant director (1995). Esther received a Distinguished Service Award from Luther College in 1971.

Frank and Esther Miller family

Frank served Decorah Lutheran Church on its council and as its legal advisor; he taught on a part-time basis at Luther College and served on the Board of Regents for 25 years. He acted for a time as president of the Decorah Chamber of Commerce, as chairman of the Aase Haugen Homes, as member of the Iowa State Bar Association Board of Governors, member of Decorah Jobs, Inc., and chairman of the Winneshiek Co. Republican organization. He was mayor of Decorah 4 years (1961-1965). He also acted as chairman of the Decorah Hospital from 1945 to 1967.

The Miller family enjoyed camping, traveling and summers at the lakes in northern Minnesota.

Miller, Roy and Edna (Miles)

Roy Miller (5 Jul 1875-15 Oct 1964) was born in Burr Oak Twp. on the farm which his grandparents, Mary (1805-1879) and Manoah Miller (9 Jan 1800-14 Aug 1889) and his father Charles E. Miller (24 Jul 1844-Nov 1916) had purchased in 1863. Roy's mother was Emma Jane Rollins (9 Aug 1852-13 Feb 1890) the daughter of James Church and Mary (Tripp) Rollins.

Roy married Edna Louise Miles (24 Mar 1880-11 Jul 1953), daughter of Emma (Goudy) and Frank Miles both from the Prosper, MN area. They lived on the Burr Oak farm all their lives. The farm became known as Viewland Farm. Before Roy became engaged in farming he completed his education in Nora Springs, IA and taught rural school for 3 years. He was keenly interested in education all his life and served many years on his home school board, and saw to it that his children were well educated.

Roy and Edna had 5 children: Emma (7 Mar 1897-30 Nov 1897); Charles (1899-1990) married Frances Sprague (b. 1905); Frank (26 Sep 1915-29 Mar 1977) married Esther Stephens (b. 23 May 1915); Mary Frances (27 May 1918-17 Mar 1919); Everett (1920-1986) married Cumalene Mart.

The Millers raised Angus cattle and Duroc Jersey hogs for breeding stock. They took great pride in the quality of their livestock and Viewlawn herds became widely known all over the U.S.A. They sold cattle into Canada and Japan as well. The cattle business was passed on to the eldest son Charles M. Miller and he in turn bequeathed it to his son Robert Miller. Robert’s son Larry Miller and wife Margaret with their children Matthew, Christopher and Andrew now live on the Viewlawn Farms.
